What does "going into Administration" mean, exactly?

Yesterday, thanks to numerous responders, I learned that the FA penalised Leeds United 15 table points because they went into administration. Since I never hear that term used on the U.S. sport scene, I'm curious what the specifics of it are, a little history about it, etc.
